What is a Community Foundation?

Philanthropy, the practice of gifting of funds and other resources to assist people to develop their skills and enterprises, has historically been the preserve of the wealthy. The Rockefellers and Carnegies of the United States are among the world’s most prominent philanthropists, and as Australia matures as a nation there are a growing number of families and businesses committed to philanthropy.

Community foundations are one of the world’s fastest growing and most effective forms of modern philanthropy because they provide an opportunity for every member of a region or district to give to their local society regardless of their wealth or background. Community foundations are independent of government, they are community run and provide the legal and financial mechanisms for locally-focused giving and distribution of funds.
